Fatal Fumes

A DOS game was developed by Spectrum Pacific Publishing and then released by Jussi Koskela in 1996, the game was called Fatal Fumes. Now you can relive the memories by playing it online here.

Fatal Fumes description

I think not mistaken if I say that in childhood many of us have played on consoles in the Micro Machines or similar games, and remember what it is. Moreover, a much larger number of people if not played, then at least know how to look like the first two parts of the GTA. Thus, it can be argued that although the sub-genre top-down racing and dead, but still famous enough. But in the mid-nineties he was still alive, so the Fatal Fumes released by a tiny Finnish company Abax Software, which consisted mainly of one person by the name of Jussi Koskela, could be quite a middling against the background of existing by the time of the competition. But I didn't. Why? The reasons are few and somewhat hurtful.

The game itself is a race to fictional cars with the top view. And the classic race without scattered around the map of different bonuses and weapons (although one of the available machines – not that other, as a tank). You are going to compete on many different tracks (they provided 35 in addition, there is a built-in editor), for each of which you need to make a few laps and come first. Of course, if you want to win. The cards themselves are diverse, the variability is achieved by placing various types of noise like trampolines or puddles, not always the usual geometry and multiple levels, with overpasses it is possible to drop or reset the opponent, significantly increasing the distance to the finish line. Have the opportunity to ride any track separately or to create your own Championships with any of them set, until all possible. From the point of view of the areas for the races to find fault with anything difficult.

There are a total of twelve cars to choose from, and each of them differs in characteristics, which are several and which theoretically need to pay attention to and to choose the most suitable for your play style option. But in reality it fades into the background. And this is the first drawback – the fleet is not balanced, the only characteristic that is important for winning is speed. The player will understand it quickly. as soon as the first round to overtake on a range of some rivals. Well, or they have it, it all depends on choice. Speaking of rivals. They, too, twelve, they have portraits and names, each with its own car. Before each competition, you can choose four of them as competitors. Artificial intelligence is not bad, but since the balance is missing, then you need to choose carefully, otherwise chase you for whom and from whom. But overall, these shortcomings are not critical.

The root of why the game doesn't even reach the rank of peasant, lies in the gameplay. The fact that the race takes place in an incredibly slow pace. Even if you put in the options the game speed at 110%, not to fit into a difficult corner you can just for the wrong car. And if you increase the cycles in DOSBox, it will start problems with the responsiveness of management. That is, the game is devoid of practically the most important components of the racing game – the use of reflexes and acquired in the process of "feeling the road".

If not for this moment, the game could recommend reading to all lovers of such entertainments. In fact the opportunity for two games on one computer here too. But, alas, does not work. Only as a relatively rare and little-known arcade racing game with top view.
